I’m Ivana Galic, a user interface designer based in Melbourne.
My design journey began with Galibugs, where we teach people how to code and build amazing iOS apps. That’s why you can see so many apps in my portfolio. Most of them were created as a part of our Swifty Ninja iOS courses. You can notice how they gradually move from the simplest apps (Ninja Oracle) to the ones with more features and screens (Photo Ninja and Tabata). As the apps were growing in complexity so were my design skills with them. I developed an eye for colours, shadows and gradients, learnt how to make complex shapes from the simple ones and put them into a perspective while keeping the visual simplicity and clarity. I love flat design with a touch of depth, high contrasts and bright, vivid colours. Made like that, my designs are playful and full of life.
But I am not just a designer. Having a background in economics gives me a better understanding of how the markets work and why people behave the way they do. It enables me to put things into perspective, and work within the bigger picture instead of just focusing on creating a pretty UI design. Design should always have a purpose, whether it is to increase traffic to a website, drive the conversion rates, grow mobile app retention or boost product sales. It is in achieving those concrete business goals where my economic background really comes in handy.

This is the icon for Photo Ninja app. Photo Ninja is one of the apps we teach our students how to build in our Swifty Ninja iOS app development course (currently in progress). It's a simple photo app, but because it’s so simple, it’s the only photo app you’ll ever need!

This is the icon for Tabata, a cool, flat-looking high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout app. It represents the iconic workout time - four minutes. The app helps you increase strength, lose weight, improve flexibility and build muscle.

Tabata is a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout app (whoa, that was a long one!). It helps you increase strength, lose weight, improve flexibility and build muscle in just 4 minutes per workout. It's true, ask Professor Izumi Tabata.
However, as simple as the four minutes of exercising sound, designing the app itself was quite complex. Focusing only on user interface design wouldn't cut here, because there are many screens which had to be purposefully connected while ecouraging the user to perform a certain action. Therefore, putting myself in user's shoes was my guidance while making this cool, flat-looking workout app. It made me think more about the experience users go through when using the product I designed.

Yoga Nidra: Sacred Sleep
This is the icon for Yoga Nidra: Sacred Sleep app. Yoga Nidra is a real app in App Store. However, this is not exactly how it looks like there. Together with background photos, I changed the icon slightly so that it expresses my approach to the app.

Healthy Parents Happy Kids App Icon Concept
Healthy Parents Happy Kids is the app icon concept I made for the same name magazine. Although it didn't win the contest on 99Designs platform, it made it to the final round. The reason is it evoked family values and emotions through colours, clarity and simplicity.

Staedtler Pencil on a Blue Background
This pencil was one of the first things I designed when I discovered Sketch (a design tool which I replaced Photoshop with for UI design, I wrote about it here). I struggled with creating the perfect reflexion of light, texture of the wood and eraser, and perfect colours, but I think I nailed it. I love how realistic and beautiful it turned out.

Future Galibugs Home Page
Galibugs was a project I started with my husband Ivan, the iOS developer. It was a place where we taught people programming fundamentals and how to build fully finished and beautifully designed iOS apps. This was also how my design journey started. The website currently online is the first version designed to make the potential users perform one and only one action. That is, to enroll into Swifty Ninja Jr, Swift programming course for complete beginners. However, if you wish to learn more about the team behind Galibugs, or check out our blog, you can find the links in the footer. But there are purposefully made subtle.
The online website is getting revamped, though! The goal is to make it more modern and attractive in a way that drives the conversion rates up. The emphasis is still on performing one action, but with giving a potential user clear and succint list of benefits she's getting if she enrolls in the course.
By thinking that way, I am also spreading out my skill set into marketing and growth area, where it's not only the pretty visual design that's important but the bigger picture of what we want to achieve with the particular design. That is, what is our ultimate goal, what do we want our users to do, how do we want to solve the problems they have. Through this process, we designers should always strive to work closely with developers, marketers, copy writers and others to learn as much as possible so that we can create what resonates best with the users and leads us towards achieving our business goals.
